Fabric Tips
When working with chiffon, it's essential to find the grain of the fabric before cutting to ensure a smooth and even finish. However, chiffon is often cut unevenly at the store, so it's recommended to purchase extra fabric - up to 12 inches more, depending on the severity of the crooked cut.
To find the grain, gently pull on one of the threads on the selvage edge. You may need to repeat this process, especially if the cut is severely uneven. Once you've identified the grain, you can either:
- Continue pulling the
thread until it's completely removed, and then cut along the resulting line.
- Snip along the resulting line slightly and then tear the fabric along the grain for a clean finish.
Keep in mind that chiffon can vary in texture and behavior. Some types may be softer and more prone to fraying, while others may be stiffer and more resistant to fraying.
