Pattern to Make Soft Sculpture Body for Bean Butt Baby (BBB) Cabbage Patch Kid

Image
Soft Sculpture Body for 12" BBB Pattern and Instructions for a replica body for your 12” BBB Cabbage Patch Kids TM **No longer available on etsy or ebay due to copyright issues. Please contact me for questions. Introduction   If you have a Bean Butt Baby (BBB) that needs a new body, it is easy enough to make one with this pattern.   The pattern pieces are for the body only.   You cannot use just ordinary knit fabric.   Trust me, I’ve tried.   You will not get the same look as a Cabbage Patch Kid TM .   Jersey knit stretches a lot; therefore, your doll will be a lot bigger than the pattern.   You have to use an interlocking 100% polyester fabric.   Joann’s Fabrics and Walmart sell something similar, but it is stretchier than the original CPK fabric and snags easily.   The original Cabbage Patch Kids TM were made with a fabric called Windsor Comfort .   The factory was called Atlanta Fabrics, based in Atlanta, Georgia.

Cabbage Patch Kids Sleepwear Patterns - Wrap Dress, Jumpsuit, Shirt and Shorts

I finally got my latest patterns finished! It took so long, due to so many interruptions and the fact that this has a total of 9 (nine) outfits (3 for each size.)  The pattern has 45 pages of just the pattern pieces.  The instructions are 16 pages.  I highly recommend purchasing the digital version since it has so many pages.   Available on Etsy  and  eBay .

Getting ready to move, Trip to Dallas, and new pattern I’m working on

1930s Inspired Pleated Dress for 16" Cabbage Patch Kids Dolls

Image
Available on  Etsy   and  eBay ..  For a limited time, get it for 50% off on Etsy. I recently purchased a doll clothes pattern that was released in 1931.   I could not believe the vague instructions that came with it.   It was literally 4 steps, with a tiny diagram of each piece and how it is put together.   I felt like it was missing instructions.   I guess I’m just used to the step-by-step instructions with photos or diagrams that we see nowadays.   It didn’t even say how to stitch the collar, and there is no neckband.   Also, the back is one piece that is to be slit from the top to about 1/3 down to make the opening.   So I did some digging and found some interesting facts.   Apparently in the 1930s, due to the Great Depression, pattern companies had to cut prices.   Some were cut from 45 cents to 15 cents, thus cutting costs by having less printed instructions   (1) .   Also, fabric had to be used sparingly.   The following is an excerpt from “Doll News” on ufdc.org:

The History of Cabbage Patch Kids

Image
The History of Cabbage Patch Kids In 1976, Xavier Roberts first started making soft sculpture dolls and displayed them at a craft shop where he worked.   As the idea of adoption came along, combined with his unique sculpting style and imagination, the dolls became very popular.   He couldn’t keep up with the custom orders he received, so he recruited his mother and sisters for help.
