Sewing Must-Haves

Sewing Must-Haves for Making Dolls and Doll Clothes

There's a lot of helpful sewing tools and must-haves that I wouldn't know what I would do without.

Cutting Tools

Fiskars Fabric Cutting Set gets beginners or experienced sewing and quilting enthusiasts started off on the right foot with three essential tools that make measuring and cutting fabric easy and mistake-free. Our Classic Stick Rotary Cutter features a 45 mm blade perfect for cutting multiple layers of fabric, the extra-large Cutting Mat offers plenty of room to work and outlasts other mats, and the Acrylic Ruler makes precise measuring easy, whether you’re making straight cuts or cutting squares. This 3-piece set is also a great gift for anyone in your life who wants to experience the joy and sense of accomplishment that comes with making their first sewing project, quilt or fabric craft.

These work really well for snipping thread ends and small areas.  They are really sharp, small, and pointy.

Perfect for tight, precise cuts, Fiskars RazorEdge Micro-Tip Easy Action Shears feature premium-grade, stainless-steel RazorEdge blades precision honed to an ultra-sharp edge to make sure every cut is crisp and clean. The Micro-Tip blades offer unmatched precision when cutting intricate details and tight patterns, and a spring-action design that opens the blades after each cut helps reduce hand strain. Additionally, a Softgrip handle offers a more comfortable grip and improved control.

I've gone through so many fabric scissors, but once I got these, I haven't had to buy any more.

Presser Feet

I use the 9mm Flat felled presser foot for turning in seams for casing, like for the waist and legs.  It makes it so much easier and the stitching is even, so it looks much nicer.

For finishing raw edges. This overcast pressure foot delivers a consistent and accurate overcasting stitch for a serged effect using your sewing machine. Thread is locked around the edge of fabric, aligned with the edge, to prevent fabric from raveling.

Knit Foot

The Knit-Edge foot hems and top stitches knits and faux furs. Also referred to as the “little sister” to the walking foot, or a miniature walking foot.

Double Piping Foot

Used to apply piping or welt cording. This presser foot gives you a professional finish whether the welt cord or piping is purchased pre-covered or you cover it yourself. Ideal for upholstered or home decoration projects.

This foot ensures all your button holes and drawstring holes are perfectly stitched and even.

Button Foot

Makes sewing on buttons really quick and easy.

Other Tools

Turn-It-All

For turning straps and other tube-like fabric pieces, I use Turn-It-All--a quicker way to turn tubes inside out.  Set includes tubes and rods in 3 sizes.

Loop Turner

I use the loop turner for pulling elastic into the casing.  Use the Loop Turner for fabric cylinders that need to be turned right side out to make narrow straps, button loops and frog closures. This simple and handy tool slides through the bias tubing while the latch hook on the end catches the end of the fabric and pulls it through the tube. It is perfect for making spaghetti straps, frog closures, button loops, Chinese ball buttons, purse straps and more.

Hemostats

I use hemostats for stuffing.  They work great for reaching in small places such as fingers and toes of soft-sculpture dolls.
