Benzoyl Peroxide vs Hydrogen Peroxide for Removing Stains on Vinyl

I’ve been doing a lot of experiments with Benzoyl Peroxide and Hydrogen Peroxide, and here are the results.

First, when using Benzoyl Peroxide and Hydrogen Peroxide, remember...

  • Always use gloves
  • Some vinyl will fade worse than others, so test a small hidden area
  • Results may vary
Variables That Affect the Outcome:

  • Temperature
  • UV Index
  • Volume (strength)
  • Stain Ingredients
  • Vinyl Ingredients
For pox on a shoe, I wanted to test which was better.  As you can see from the photo, the HP (creme developer) has lightened the pox more than the BP (acne wash).  It was put in direct sunlight for a week (being removed and reapplied daily).

For pink marker, using both HP and BP seems to do the trick. I had been trying for days to get rid of this pink mark under the lip, with no change using HP.  I mixed the two and put it on (in the sun same as before) at 7am. By 2:40pm it was completely gone!

For whitening yellowed shoes, HP seems to work better. I put HP on one shoe, and BP on the other. After one day, the shoes were lighter, but the one with the HP was a little lighter.

For ink and permanent marker, they both work well. Using dark-colored vinyl, I put HP on one mark, and BP on the other. After 5 hours, the marks were completely gone.

In this experiment, I mixed together a small amount of BP and HP, and put the shoe in direct sunlight. It took two days to get the mark out. I’m not sure what the mark was from. It looked purple, which is the color of the straps, so I assume it was the color from the strap that bled onto the shoe.

In conclusion, mixing the two does seem to work the best, depending on the stain. HP works best on pox and lightning shoes.
The HP is a lot cheaper than BP. You can get a 16oz bottle for less than $8. Acne cream is usually $5 for a 1oz tube, and acne wash is about $8 for a 5oz tube.
As far as smell, HP has none, but BP smells horrible and even after washing it off, the vinyl continues to smell.
And as far as fading the vinyl, BP has been known to, but I have not seen HP fade vinyl.
